Witches Quarry Thursday 8th September

It had to be Witches! It’s that time of year with the light failing and the leaves beginning to turn (oh, season of mists and mellow fruitfulness . .) but we managed 3 or 4 routes each before dark and a sociable pint at the Assheton Arms afterwards. What could be nicer?
Linda renewed her acquaintance with Familiar’s Fall HVS and took its name a bit too literally by taking her first leader fall onto trad gear – an essential milestone in every climber’s career! Dave did the honours, holding the fall manfully, and Linda dusted herself off and made it to the top on her second attempt. Superb!
New girl Jen F (as distinct from Jenny S!) came along to revive her climbing after a long layoff and had a brilliant night, doing Cracklap HS comfortably and doing virtual ascents of Peel Off VS and Thrutch VS (not virtual in the modern sense, just that she virtually did them, only running out of steam on the very last moves!) A really good effort on two tough and steep routes that are both pretty high in the grade.
It was great also to have another new lad along: Richard B (“Buxy”), and with new climbers in their forties joining us as they have been recently, the average age of the club is going down dramatically!
Buxy used his strength from years of martial arts training to good effect and did Peel Off comfortably before teaming up with Andrew on Broomstick VS and other routes.
Sorry no pics this week, the light just wasn’t up to it.
