Despite warnings of heavy rain and strong winds earlier in the week, six CMC members made the journey to Hallthwaites Church, south-west of Broughton-in-Furness, for the September, Sunday walk. Crossing the A595 road the group took an indistinct path passing Bank House to reach Stoupdale Beck, then a sustained climb over Gray Stones led to the plateau of Whitecombe Moss for the final push over Hentoe Hill to the summit of Black Combe. Here the party were rewarded with blue sky and sunshine, together with superb views of the Isle of Man, Barrow & Walney Island, the Lancashire coast, the Galloway Hills and the Lake District.
After retracing their steps in a short downpour to Whitecombe Moss, members headed over Swinside Fell to reach a bridleway leading to Swinside and the stone-circle at Sunkenkirk, before heading south via Knott Hill back to Hallthwaites. The finale of the day was refreshment at the Manor Arms Hotel in Broughton-in-Furness, the CAMRA best pub of 2015. Thanks Godfrey.
